Mid-market HCM | Facts checked October 2026

Paycor vs Paylocity

Paycor, now part of Paychex, and Paylocity both serve US midsize companies with payroll and HR suites. Ownership and product focus are the key differences.

The short answer

Pick Paycor if recruiting and manager-facing tools are high on your list and you are comfortable buying from a company that is now part of Paychex. Pick Paylocity if you want an independent public vendor with strong engagement, communication, and mobile tools for employees.

Both are solid mid-market HCM suites for US companies. The biggest difference in 2026 is not features. It is ownership: Paychex completed its acquisition of Paycor in April 2025, and buyers should understand what that means for roadmap and support before signing a multi-year contract.

How these two products got here

Paycor started in Cincinnati in 1990 and grew from payroll into a full HCM suite for small and midsize businesses. In recent years it put real effort into recruiting and into tools for frontline leaders, positioning itself around helping managers, not just HR administrators. In April 2025, Paychex completed its acquisition of Paycor, adding Paycor's mid-market customers to its large small-business base.

Paylocity, founded in 1997 and headquartered near Chicago, has grown as an independent public company. Its focus on employee experience, including Community for company communication, surveys, recognition, and a strong mobile app, has made it a frequent finalist against Paycor in mid-market deals.

Acquisitions often bring benefits like more resources and broader services, but they also bring change. Product lines may be combined, support teams reorganized, and roadmaps adjusted. None of that is necessarily bad, but it should be part of your evaluation.

Where Paycor has the edge

  • Recruiting. Paycor's recruiting module is more developed than many payroll-first vendors, with job distribution and candidate management built in.
  • Manager insights. Paycor has invested in giving managers useful views of their teams, including attendance and turnover risk.
  • Parent company scale. Paychex brings a large service organization, retirement and insurance products, and financial strength.
  • Midsize focus. Paycor's product decisions have long centered on companies with 50 to 1,000 employees.

Where Paylocity has the edge

  • Employee engagement. Community, surveys, and recognition are built into the suite.
  • Independence. Paylocity is not working through a post-acquisition integration, which can mean a more predictable roadmap.
  • Mobile experience. Employees can do most tasks from their phones.
  • Breadth of suite. Learning, compensation, and performance sit alongside payroll and HR.

Pricing and total cost

Both vendors quote per employee per month based on modules. When comparing, ask for itemized quotes, implementation fees, and renewal caps. With Paycor, it is reasonable to ask for extra protection given the ownership change, such as a price cap at renewal, the right to stay on your current product for the full term, and clear notice if products are combined. With Paylocity, ask about contract length and what support looks like after the first year.

Implementation, support, and switching

Implementation timelines for both are typically several weeks to a few months. Ask each vendor about current implementation capacity and how many projects your team lead is handling. Run a parallel payroll before going live.

If you are a current Paycor customer reconsidering after the acquisition, there is no need to rush. Ask Paychex directly for its product roadmap, then decide at your next natural renewal point.

Reference questions after the acquisition

Ask Paycor for references who have been customers since before and after the Paychex acquisition, and ask whether anything changed in support or product updates. Ask Paylocity references how support has been in their second and third years.

Which one should you choose?

Choose Paycor if

  • Recruiting tools are a top requirement.
  • You want strong manager-facing tools.
  • You are comfortable with Paychex ownership and want access to Paychex services.
  • You can negotiate protections around roadmap and renewal.

Choose Paylocity if

  • Employee engagement and communication matter most.
  • You prefer an independent vendor with no pending integration.
  • Your workforce relies heavily on mobile.
  • You want learning and compensation in the same suite.

Run a fair head-to-head demo

Give both vendors the same scenarios, a week in advance, and score them on the same scale. These scenarios tend to separate these two products:

  1. Open a requisition, post the job, move candidates through stages, and send an offer.
  2. Show what a frontline manager sees about their team's attendance and turnover risk.
  3. Post an announcement and recognition message to employees.
  4. Present your product roadmap for the next two years in writing.
  5. Explain the support model, including who we call and escalation paths.

Our free demo scorecard keeps the scoring consistent.
