What Paylocity is
Paylocity has been building payroll and HR software since 1997 and serves mainly US companies in the range of a few dozen to a few thousand employees. Its foundation is cloud payroll with tax filing, and around it Paylocity offers HR, benefits administration, time and labor, scheduling, recruiting, onboarding, performance, compensation, and learning.
What sets Paylocity apart in many evaluations is its emphasis on employee engagement and communication. Its Community feature works like an internal social feed for announcements and recognition, and the mobile app is built for employees to do much more than check a pay stub. For distributed and frontline workforces, that communication layer can matter as much as payroll accuracy.
Paylocity sells through direct sales teams and supports customers with a mix of account managers and support teams, which makes the quality of your assigned team an important part of the experience.
Who it fits, and who should look elsewhere
A strong match for
- Companies with roughly 50 to 2,500 employees that want payroll and HR in one suite.
- Employers with hourly or frontline staff who need mobile time, scheduling, and communication.
- HR teams that want built-in engagement and recognition tools.
- Organizations moving off a basic payroll service into a full HCM.
Probably not the right choice for
- Very small businesses that want self-serve setup and published pricing.
- Large global enterprises with payroll in many countries.
- Companies that only need an ATS or a single point tool.

Payroll flexibility
Reviewers note good handling of multiple pay groups, earnings types, and deductions.
What to check before you sign
- Implementation experience varies. Ask for a named implementation team and a written timeline.
- Pricing transparency. Pricing is quote based. Compare the full bundle with alternatives over three years.
- Module depth. Some talent modules are lighter than specialist tools. Check the depth you need in recruiting or performance.
Pricing approach
Paylocity does not publish pricing. Quotes are typically per employee per month and depend on the modules selected and company size. Ask about implementation fees and renewal caps.
Implementation and support
Payroll implementations commonly take several weeks to a few months, depending on complexity and the number of modules. Plan a parallel payroll before go-live.
AI features
Paylocity has been adding AI assistance across its platform for tasks like answering employee questions and helping admins find information. Ask which features are generally available versus in preview.
