How we build and check these calculators
Each calculator started with a question HR and payroll people ask us all the time: what do we owe this employee in overtime, what does this hire really cost, why does our turnover number never match finance's. We wrote the formula the way a payroll specialist would work it on paper, then built the tool around it.
Every formula is shown on its page, with a worked example you can check by hand. Federal figures, such as the 2026 Social Security wage base and FUTA rate, come from the Social Security Administration, the IRS, and the Department of Labor. Overtime rules follow the FLSA regulations and state labor departments. Metrics such as cost per hire follow published standards where they exist, including the ANSI and SHRM cost per hire standard.

Getting reliable numbers
Most calculation mistakes in HR come from the inputs, not the math: the wrong workweek, a bonus left out of the regular rate, a different headcount in this report than the last. Decide how you count things, write it down, and apply it every time. The number then means something when you compare it month to month.
If you run these calculations every pay period, that's a sign the work belongs in a system. Payroll, time and attendance, and people analytics software do this math automatically and keep the history.
