What is the GPHR?

The GPHR is the credential for HR professionals who work across borders: setting policy for teams in several countries, managing international assignments, or running HR for a company with a global workforce. It's the hardest HRCI exam to pass, with a 56 percent pass rate in 2025, and one of the least common, with about 2,800 holders worldwide.

That scarcity is part of its value. In a 2018 Payscale study cited by HRCI, GPHR holders saw a 16 percent pay increase, and for employers hiring for global roles it's a quick signal that a candidate understands cross-border employment issues.

How much the GPHR costs

$495 exam fee plus a $100 application fee.

Three-year cost of ownership: about $764, the exam plus one recertification fee, before study materials. Each extra HRCI credential adds $50 at renewal.

Many employers pay for certification as professional development. Ask before you apply, and get any repayment terms in writing.

What's on the GPHR exam

The GPHR has 125 questions, 100 of them scored, over two hours and 15 minutes. It covers global talent strategy, international employment law and compliance, global mobility, total rewards across countries, and workforce planning for multinational organizations. Questions assume you understand how employment rules, culture, and business practice differ from country to country.

How to prepare for the GPHR

  1. Document your cross-border HR responsibility before applying. HRCI looks for two or more countries or regions.
  2. Study global mobility, expatriate compensation, and international data privacy in depth.
  3. Read beyond US law. The GPHR expects comparative knowledge across major regions.
  4. Allow extra study time. The 56 percent pass rate is well below HRCI's other credentials.

Is the GPHR worth it?

For HR professionals in global roles, the GPHR is the most targeted credential available, and its rarity makes it stand out. If your work is mostly in one country, a generalist credential such as the SPHR or SHRM-SCP will serve you better.

Career context: Human resources managers held about 224,900 jobs in 2025 and earned a median of $149,280 a year in May 2025. BLS projects 6 percent growth from 2025 to 2035, with about 16,800 openings a year, and notes that employers may prefer certified candidates. As a professor of HR, I highly encourage my students to supplement it with certification.
