What is the SPHR?

The SPHR is HRCI's senior credential for HR leaders who own policy and strategy for a US organization. Where the PHR asks how to run a program correctly, the SPHR asks whether it's the right program at all, and how it fits the business. It has the highest pass rate of HRCI's core credentials, 76 percent in 2025, which reflects a more experienced candidate pool rather than an easier exam.

The SPHR also has a distinctive recertification rule: at least 15 of your 60 credits every three years must be Business credits, covering strategy, finance, and operations. It's HRCI's way of keeping senior HR leaders fluent in the language of the business.

How much the SPHR costs

$495 exam fee plus a $100 application fee.

Three-year cost of ownership: about $764, the exam plus one recertification fee, before study materials. Each extra HRCI credential adds $50 at renewal.

Many employers pay for certification as professional development. Ask before you apply, and get any repayment terms in writing.

What's on the SPHR exam

The SPHR exam has 140 questions, 115 of them scored, over two and a half hours. The focus is leadership and strategy, policy development, talent planning, total rewards strategy, and employee relations at the organizational level, all in a US context. Questions often describe a business problem and ask for the most strategic response.

How to prepare for the SPHR

  1. Confirm your experience is professional-level and strategic before you apply.
  2. Focus on business acumen: workforce planning, budgeting, and measuring HR's impact.
  3. Practice reading long scenarios quickly. Time is tighter than it looks.
  4. Plan your 15 Business credits from day one so recertification isn't a scramble.

Is the SPHR worth it?

The SPHR is a strong choice for US-focused HR leaders, especially in organizations where HRCI credentials are already common. It costs $595 and needs four to seven years of experience. Since SHRM cut its senior exam price in 2026, compare costs carefully in our SPHR vs SHRM-SCP guide.

Career context: Human resources managers held about 224,900 jobs in 2025 and earned a median of $149,280 a year in May 2025. BLS projects 6 percent growth from 2025 to 2035, with about 16,800 openings a year, and notes that employers may prefer certified candidates.
