What is the SHRM-SCP?
The SHRM-SCP is SHRM's senior credential, built for HR leaders who set policy and shape strategy rather than carry it out. The eligibility test reflects that. SHRM doesn't count years in HR; it counts years of strategic-level work, at least three of them, with 1,000 or more hours each year. A long-tenured HR generalist may not qualify, while a newer HR director who owns workforce planning might.
The biggest change in 2026 is price. For the December 2026 window onward, SHRM charges the same for both exams, so the SHRM-SCP dropped from $520 to $695 down to $350 to $499. If you qualify, there's no longer a cost reason to take the CP first.

How much the SHRM-SCP costs
Since June 2026, the SHRM-SCP costs the same as the SHRM-CP: $350 or $399 for members and $450 or $499 for nonmembers, including a $50 application fee. Earlier 2026 pricing was $520 to $695.
Three-year cost of ownership: about $515 for a member who applies early and recertifies with PDCs, or $709 for a nonmember at standard pricing, before study materials.
Many employers pay for certification as professional development. Ask before you apply, and get any repayment terms in writing.
What's on the SHRM-SCP exam
The format matches the SHRM-CP, 134 questions with the same mix of knowledge and situational judgment items, but the scenarios sit at the leadership level: aligning HR strategy with business goals, advising executives, leading change, and making decisions with incomplete information. Expect questions where every option is defensible and the best one depends on organizational risk and long-term impact.
How to prepare for the SHRM-SCP
- Confirm your strategic experience before you apply. SHRM can audit it and ask for job descriptions.
- Study the BASK leadership and business competencies in depth. They drive the hardest situational items.
- Take timed practice exams. Senior candidates often run short of time by overthinking scenarios.
- Because the price now matches the CP, skip the CP if you already qualify for the SCP.
Is the SHRM-SCP worth it?
For HR leaders, the SHRM-SCP signals strategic capability in a way experience alone can't always prove on a résumé, and the 2026 price cut makes it a far easier decision. Compare it with the HRCI SPHR if your role leans toward US policy and compliance, and read our SPHR vs SHRM-SCP comparison.
