At a glance

  • What it is: the SHRM Certified Professional, from the Society for Human Resource Management, for generalist, operational HR.
  • Cost: $350 to $499.
  • Eligibility: None required.
  • Pass rate: not published by the certifying body.
  • Renewal: 60 professional development credits (PDCs) every 3 years, or retake the exam.

What is the SHRM-CP?

The SHRM-CP is the most widely held entry point into SHRM's credentials, and since SHRM dropped its experience requirement it's open to almost anyone with a working knowledge of HR. That change made it the default first certification for HR generalists, coordinators, and people moving into HR from operations, payroll, or office management.

What sets it apart is the exam. About 40 percent of the questions are situational judgment items: short workplace scenarios where you choose the best and worst responses. You can't pass by memorizing law alone. You have to show how you'd handle an investigation, a manager who wants to skip a process, or a policy that conflicts with a business goal.

How much the SHRM-CP costs

Members pay $350 early bird or $399 standard; nonmembers pay $450 or $499. Students pay $150 to $299 and military candidates $320 to $469. A $50 nonrefundable application fee is included.

Three-year cost of ownership: about $515 for a member who applies early and recertifies with PDCs, or $709 for a nonmember at standard pricing, before study materials.

Many employers pay for certification as professional development. Ask before you apply, and get any repayment terms in writing.

What's on the SHRM-CP exam

SHRM builds both of its exams from the SHRM Body of Applied Skills and Knowledge (BASK). Questions are split roughly evenly between behavioral competencies (Leadership, Interpersonal, and Business) and HR knowledge (People, Organization, and Workplace). The 54 situational judgment items carry much of the difficulty, because two or three answers can look reasonable and you have to pick the one an experienced HR professional would choose.

Scores are scaled from 120 to 200, and 200 is passing. SHRM doesn't publish how many correct answers that takes, or an official pass rate.

How to prepare for the SHRM-CP

  1. Read the BASK first. It tells you how SHRM thinks about each competency, which is what the situational questions test.
  2. Practice situational judgment items under time pressure. Most people find them harder than the knowledge questions.
  3. Book your test date as soon as your application is approved. Prometric seats near the end of a window fill early.
  4. Apply in the early bird period to save $49, or $100 if you join SHRM first and the membership pays for itself.

Is the SHRM-CP worth it?

For most people in their first five years of HR, yes. It's widely recognized in job postings, it has no experience gate, and at $350 to $499 it costs less than most HR courses. The bigger cost is time: plan on 10 to 14 weeks of steady study. If your work is heavily focused on US employment law compliance, compare it with the PHR before you decide.

Career context: Human resources specialists held about 939,700 jobs in 2025 and earned a median of $75,940 a year in May 2025. BLS projects 6 percent job growth from 2025 to 2035, faster than average, with about 73,700 openings a year. Source: BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook: Human resources specialists.

Certification has become indicative of a future employee who is both self-motivated and invested in continuous learning.
