The short answer

Neither credential needs HR experience, so the choice comes down to recognition, timing, and cost. Choose the SHRM-CP if you can wait for a testing window and want the credential most employers recognize. Choose the aPHR if you want to test soon, from home, with a shorter exam, and plan to move up to the PHR later.

At standard pricing the aPHR costs $400; the SHRM-CP costs $399 for members and $499 for nonmembers. The aPHR's 2025 pass rate was 71 percent.

Which one fits you

Choose the aPHR if

  • No experience required
  • Short exam, year-round, online option
  • Lowest HRCI price at $400
  • Good stepping stone to the PHR

Choose the SHRM-CP if

  • No experience or degree requirement
  • Situational questions reflect real HR judgment
  • Widely recognized by US employers
  • Same price as the SHRM-SCP, so upgrading later costs the same

As a professor of HR, I highly encourage my students to supplement it with certification.

Frequently asked questions

Can a beginner take the SHRM-CP?
Yes. SHRM removed the experience requirement, so beginners can take it.
Is the aPHR worth it?
It's a quick, affordable way to show HR fundamentals, but it carries less weight with employers than the SHRM-CP or PHR.
Should I take the aPHR before the PHR?
It's not required. Many people take the aPHR first, then the PHR once they have enough experience.
