What is the aPHR?

The aPHR is built for people at the very start of an HR career: students, HR assistants, career changers, and managers outside HR who handle people issues. It requires no HR experience, the exam is the shortest of HRCI's, and you can take it from home any time of year. About 2,100 people tested for it in 2025, and 71 percent passed.

The aPHR is also the only HRCI credential that isn't accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies, a reflection of its knowledge-based, entry-level design. It shows you understand HR fundamentals, not that you've practiced them.

$300 exam fee plus a $100 application fee.

Three-year cost of ownership: about $569, the exam plus one recertification fee, before study materials. Each extra HRCI credential adds $50 at renewal.

Many employers pay for certification as professional development. Ask before you apply, and get any repayment terms in writing.

What's on the aPHR exam

The aPHR has 90 questions, 65 of them scored, in an hour and 45 minutes. It covers the fundamentals: talent acquisition, learning and development, compensation and benefits, employee relations, and compliance and risk management. Questions test knowledge of HR operations and US employment law basics rather than judgment calls.

How to prepare for the aPHR

  1. Start with the basics of US employment law: wage and hour, anti-discrimination, and leave.
  2. Use HRCI's content outline as a checklist, since it maps directly to the exam.
  3. Take at least two full practice tests to get comfortable with the format.
  4. Test online if a test center is far away. OnVUE works from a quiet room with a webcam.

Is the aPHR worth it?

The aPHR is worth it if you have little or no HR experience and want a credential now. If you can wait a year or have some HR exposure, compare it with the SHRM-CP, which also has no experience requirement and carries more weight with many employers. Our aPHR vs SHRM-CP guide walks through the choice.

Career context: Human resources specialists held about 939,700 jobs in 2025 and earned a median of $75,940 a year in May 2025. BLS projects 6 percent job growth from 2025 to 2035, faster than average, with about 73,700 openings a year. Source: BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook: Human resources specialists.

As a professor of HR, I highly encourage my students to supplement it with certification.
