What a hotel front desk agent does
The front desk agent is the first and last person most hotel guests see. They check people in and out, solve problems on the spot, and quietly handle situations that range from lost keys to emergencies at 2 a.m. The job description should be clear about shifts, especially overnight work, and about how much upselling and cash handling the role includes.

How much to pay a hotel front desk agent
Half of US hotel, motel, and resort desk clerks earned more than $16.86 an hour in May 2025, and half earned less, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That national figure is a starting point, not a pay range. Pay for the same job can differ by 30 percent or more between metro areas, so check the BLS occupation profile for state and metro data before you set your range.
| Median hourly wage | $16.86 |
|---|---|
| Median annual equivalent (hourly median x 2,080 hours) | $35,070 |
| Mean annual wage | $35,550 |
| Occupation code used | 43-4081: Hotel, motel, and resort desk clerks |
For hourly roles, the legal floor matters as much as the market rate. Check the current rate where the job is based in our minimum wage by state table, and the state's overtime and break rules in our state labor law library.
To convert between hourly and annual pay, use our salary to hourly calculator. If you hire in a state or city with a pay transparency law, the range must appear in the posting itself. Our pay transparency laws guide lists where, and our guide to salary bands explains how to set ranges you can defend.
Exempt status, licenses, and legal notes
FLSA status: Nonexempt (overtime eligible). Job titles don't decide overtime eligibility. Duties and pay do. Our guide to exempt vs non-exempt employees walks through each test, and the overtime calculator shows what a nonexempt employee is owed.
Front desk agents are nonexempt. Overnight agents who are required to stay on the premises must generally be paid for that time, and sleeping time can be excluded only in limited cases set out in DOL rules. Several cities, including Seattle, Chicago, and Los Angeles, have hotel worker protection ordinances with requirements such as panic buttons for some staff. Shift differentials for nights should be stated in the posting.
This is general information for US employers, not legal advice. Laws change and vary by state and city, so confirm the current rules or talk to employment counsel before you rely on them.
Interview questions to ask
Ask every candidate the same core questions and score answers against the same criteria. Structured interviews are fairer and predict job performance better than open conversation.
- Tell me about a time you turned around an unhappy guest.
- What would you do if a guest arrived and their reservation was missing?
- How would you handle a noise complaint at 1 a.m.?
- How do you stay organized during a busy check-in rush?
When you're ready to schedule, use our interview invitation email template. For a full hiring process, read the recruitment process guide.
