What a marketing manager does
Marketing managers plan and run the programs that create demand: campaigns, content, events, paid media, and the analytics behind them. Because "marketing manager" can mean anything from a one-person team in a startup to a leader of specialists in a large company, the description should say what the person owns, what budget they control, and how success is measured. Candidates read those three things more closely than anything else.

How much to pay a marketing manager
Half of US marketing managers earned more than $80.19 an hour in May 2025, and half earned less, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That national figure is a starting point, not a pay range. Pay for the same job can differ by 30 percent or more between metro areas, so check the BLS occupation profile for state and metro data before you set your range.
| Median hourly wage | $80.19 |
|---|---|
| Median annual equivalent (hourly median x 2,080 hours) | $166,800 |
| Mean annual wage | $177,770 |
| Occupation code used | 11-2021: Marketing managers |
To convert between hourly and annual pay, use our salary to hourly calculator. If you hire in a state or city with a pay transparency law, the range must appear in the posting itself. Our pay transparency laws guide lists where, and our guide to salary bands explains how to set ranges you can defend.
Exempt status, licenses, and legal notes
FLSA status: Usually exempt. Job titles don't decide overtime eligibility. Duties and pay do. Our guide to exempt vs non-exempt employees walks through each test, and the overtime calculator shows what a nonexempt employee is owed.
Marketing managers are usually exempt under the executive or administrative exemption when they lead a function or make significant independent decisions and are paid above the salary threshold. Marketing coordinators who mostly carry out instructions are more likely to be nonexempt. Marketing teams also need to follow FTC rules on endorsements and testimonials, and the CAN-SPAM Act for commercial email.
This is general information for US employers, not legal advice. Laws change and vary by state and city, so confirm the current rules or talk to employment counsel before you rely on them.
Interview questions to ask
Ask every candidate the same core questions and score answers against the same criteria. Structured interviews are fairer and predict job performance better than open conversation.
- Tell me about a campaign that didn't work. What did you change?
- How do you decide where to put the next dollar of budget?
- How do you work with sales when lead quality is in dispute?
- Walk me through how you'd launch a new product.
When you're ready to schedule, use our interview invitation email template. For a full hiring process, read the recruitment process guide.
